Look back over your responses to the questions. What statements did you most agree with? Which ones were you not so certain about? Today's students need someone to guide them through the process of learning how to take care of their own needs. With the pressures created by a world where credible information is scarce and advice is often tainted by individual interests, students need people of integrity, courage, and knowledge. As a teacher, you are likely to be blessed with all of these. As you believe in yourself, so shall your students learn to believe in themselves.
Throughout the rest of this trail, you will explore why it is important for your students to learn also about self-care and resilience. You will have opportunities to review what other educators and researchers have to say about the self-care needs of students who are likely to be similar to the students in your classroom. The path will lead you through examples of 'teachable moments' which you can create or capture in your that classroom. These moments often offer natural opportunities to integrate teaching about self-care and resilience once you begin attending to them. Finally, you will have the opportunity to explore how classroom management strategies can support student self-care and resilience.
We want you to discover the opportunities you have to teach
your students to value the 'whole self'--body, mind, emotions and
spirit. Your time spent on this trail will likely help you become
more comfortable and competent in teaching what many believe are
'controversial' topics which may arise in class discussions about
self-care and resilience.
